Rooms.asia blog post poor slums

Humans are incredibly adaptive creatures. Naturally we are also creatures of habit, so if we get used to a certain lifestyle, over time that same lifestyle we start calling normal. But is that really the truth?

Naturally Roomz.asia focuses on room rental opportunities in Malaysia and Singapore. We are present all over the country from Penang in the north to Johor Bahru in the south. Malaysians consider their lifestyle very normal and pretty much average yet we still find time to complain. Many of us, however, don’t know that there are people living under completely different circumstances that we would call much, much worse than ours, yet they feel comfortable and satisfied with it. Don’t believe us? Just wait for it and we will prove you wrong in a second.

To understand what exactly we are talking about please watch this amazing talk by photographer Iwan Baan who shares the experiences of him exploring the remote parts of the world in search of a definition of a ‘normal lifestyle’, a talk brought to us by TED. Definitely worth watching.

So why would some of us complain about sharing a house or apartment or landlords not getting along with their tenants after what we have just watched? Should we be more sensitive or just accept things as they are because, after all, this is a normal lifestyle for those people?

Makes you think… So who defines what is normal and what is not? Does comfortability neccessarily means happyness? How adaptive are we really?

…Till the next time…
